Russia Studies in the USA: Lecture by Yuri Nadtochei
During the lecture "Russian Studies in the USA: current state and problems", political scientist Yuri Nadtochey presented his own periodization of the stages of development of Russian studies and Sovietology in the USA, noting the peculiarities of each of the stages. The subjects involved in Russia Studies in the USA are more variable than in Russia.

Briefly about American Russian studies:

  • About 520 university Master's programs in Russian studies
  • About 172 thousand specialists
With regard to the areas of employment of Russian graduates, the following picture develops (Carnegie Report 2020):
  • 39% of the public sector – civil service, government organizations, law enforcement agencies
  • 23% private sector – private sector
  • 14% education
  • 10% academic environment
  • 7% of NGOs
  • 7% think tanks
The speaker also considered geopolitical and political-ideological challenges to Russian studies. Yuri Nadtochey, PhD in history, drew attention to the concerns of the heads of programs on Russian studies in modern conditions. The lecture is illustrated with statistical data on the dynamics of admission to universities, learning Russian in the USA, etc.

Based on his own experience of academic internships in the USA, Yuri answered questions from the audience regarding legislation on foreign agents, succession of personnel in the industry, as well as the tasks of American Russian studies in the CIS. International students and graduates of the Public Diplomat Course took part in the discussion.
